Nick and Phyllis disagree on whether Matt’s a monster whose actions are in the past. Why do you care about him? Nick wonders if she’s using Matt for ‘personal gain’.
Claire got an alert on her phone; it’s Jordan’s birthday. Once Jordan threw her a birthday party. A rich girl had a party the same day and no one came to Claire’s. Jordan said the girl had to pay so Claire told a lie that got the girl expelled. How could I be such an awful person? Something from my old life always creeps back in.
At breakfast with Holden, Stephanie felt guilty for keeping secrets from him – but, the thought of telling him makes her a little nervous. Nate suggests they practice.
Matt left town with Patty, Phyllis informs Nick. He suggests she focus on Arabesque. Phyllis doesn’t want to ‘do it alone’.
Signing his bill (because he apparently has a credit card now) and grabbing his duffel bag, Matt flashes back to Phyllis begging him to stay. He texts Patty to say he needs a minute – don’t do anything crazy.
After Stephanie practices telling Holden that she and Nate are more than friends, he (Nate) offers to be the one to tell him.
On the verge of tears, Phyllis expresses how alone and ostracized she’s felt. Nick declares her an ‘extraordinary person’ – what Matt’s done can never be erased. He’s gone, Phyllis repeats. On cue, Matt calls.
Claire likes to remember the bad things she’s done so she doesn’t go back to being that person again. We choose who we are, Victoria knows Claire has a happy life ahead of her. Let’s go out for lunch.
Still on the patio, Kyle sends Victoria a text message. Meet me at the motel? Reading it, Victoria tells Claire that she has another lunch appointment but will cancel it. No no, Claire’s sure her Mom’s plans are more important than distracting her.
Now it’s Nate’s turn to practice his speech (while Stephanie does a terrible impression of Holden)
